Retail sector brings more joy to people than the Deputy PM

Shouldn’t we be celebrating the everyday workmen who keep Singapore’s economy humming instead?

In the latest brouhaha a few days ago, Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean had to issue an apology and amendment to the Population White Paper in Parliament.

A segment of a footnote in the White Paper had classified nursing, together with retail, as a low-skilled job.

Footnote 12 on Page 40 of the White Paper to be deleted, originally read: “Certain low-skilled jobs like personal services, retail, and nursing are hard to offshore. They will still be needed even as the economy upgrades.”

DPM Teo’s apology: “This classification of low-skilled jobs is not correct. I would like to apologise to those whose professions have been unintentionally misrepresented”.

Well, there are certainly some civil servants out there who prepared the White Paper who think quite highly of themselves and what they do.

And aren’t the people in retail the ones who form the backbone of Singapore’s economy?

Take a look at this “low-skilled” ice cream retail man on the Orchard Road belt on the first day of a rainy Chinese New Year. He is bringing more joy to the people on the street than the Deputy Prime Minister for sure.
