Move is said to be inspired by Disney movie, Maleficient

Anti-coup protesters in Thailand have taken to throwing chicken feathers in the air as a symbol of defiance against the military. This move is said to be inspired by Angelina Jolie’s character in Disney’s latest movie Maleficent.

“Maleficent was robbed of her wings and this led to her Kingdom entering into an age of death and destruction. Much like Thailand,” said protest leader Cheekerngrinkaree Akstraspisee.

Both yellow and red shirts were found united in their common need for these feathers. While those opposed to Thaksin were heartened by being able to compare the former Thai prime minister with Maleficent’s nemesis King Stephen, Red Shirts claimed that Bangkok elites had effectively robbed Thailand of its democratic process.

“Pop culture icons make protests so much easier. The narrative is simple and it leaves protesters more cognitive room to decide on more important matters – like creating cheers and dancing. Imagine what would happen if they stopped for a minute to think about the complexities behind the political changes in Thailand. They’d never get down to conducting the actual protest!” said pop-culture specialist and political analyst Eric de Yaya.
