A 19-year-old teen born in Singapore but moved to New Zealand when he was eight is seeking an exemption from national service.

Singapore authorities have demanded that Brandon Smith, who lives in the city of Dunedin, report for a pre-enlistment medical screening.

If he fails to comply, he faces a two-year jail term and a $10,000 fine when he re-enters Singapore.

Smith, who holds dual citizenship and can only renounce his Singapore citizenship when he turns 21, said spending two years doing NS was “difficult and pointless”.

Here are three thoughts Singaporeans have:

sian-half-auntie “This doesn’t live up to the New Zealand haka warrior warmongering spirit.”
Da Zhan, 43-year-old frying pan salesperson

sian-half-uncle “He is already showing that he is not a true blue Singaporean as he don’t know how to malinger.”
Chao Keng, 63-year-old wound dresser

happy-bird-girl “This shows Singapore’s flexibility in handling the situation, giving him a choice between never coming back or going to jail.”
Xuan Zhe, 17-year-old survey administrator
