Sungei Road flea market, which has been around for 80 years, will be shutting down soon to make way for the upcoming Sungei Road MRT station to open in 2017.

This will automatically put the 100-odd peddlers at the flea market — 70 percent of whom are aged between 60 and 80 years old and belong to the Pioneer Generation — out of business. Most of them are illiterate.

The peddlers said they appreciate the continued efforts to remember the elderly as The Pioneer Generation of Singapore, who have helped make Singapore into a metropolitan society at the expense of copious amounts of their sweat, blood and tears.

Lau Ah Kong, a 70-year-old local said: “The Pioneer Generation worked hard to build Singapore. Now they need to make way to build Singapore. That’s what Pioneer Generation is: Keep helping to build Singapore for little benefit.”

“The Pioneer Generation do not even require memories. And we don’t need to be remembered. You can discard us now.”
