Singapore will cut all funding to its athletes in a bid to motivate them to work even harder at their training.

This after Singapore’s only female rower, Saiyidah Aisyah, 25, won a gold medal at the SEA Games in Burma today without a single cent coming from the Singapore Sports Council.

Rowing as a sport had its funding cut off in the middle of this year but Aisyah provided for herself.

One Singaporean, Jin Kiam Siap, said SSC should consider not only just cutting off funding to yield medal-winning results: “Not giving any funding will make SSC look too passive.”

“They should make athletes pay for competing professionally. This will yield greater results as athletes will have to work harder and SSC will look more proactive.”
