Bilateral ties between both countries set to warm in coming years

Indonesian voters have picked a Singaporean candidate to lead their country. According to the official vote tally, former furniture maker┬áJoko “Jokowi” Widodo edged out his closest rival, Prabowo Subianto by 8 million votes, or 6.3%.

This, according to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, marks a turning point for Singapore-Indonesian diplomatic relations which have soured in recent years. Tensions were caused primarily due to the haze winds blowing in the direction of Singapore, and Indonesia’s naming of a naval vessel after known terrorists who bombed MacDonald House in Singapore in 1965 oversight of Singapore history.

While PM Lee has since unfriended former Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Facebook, he maintained his friendship with Jokowi through frequent lunches of Bak Kut Teh.

Jokowi’s status as a Chinese, Christian Singaporean has been the topic of consternation for losing presidential candidate, Prabowo, who plans to spend the next four years demanding for Jokowi’s birth certificate. In the near term however, he plans on mounting a legal challenge to investigate widespread, systemic fraud in the 2014 elections.

“If the electoral system had functioned as it was designed to, during the Suharto era, there is no way Jokowi would have won,” said political pundit Eric de Yaya.

“Something is obviously very, very broken.”
