PM Lee Hsien Loong’s failure to submit MC on time shows lapses in govt accounting process

Public disclosure on Facebook now might help stem criticism though.

Singaporeans from all walks of life were shocked to learn that Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong had forgotten to submit his medical certificates — after he had surgery mid-February — for proper accounting purposes and yet had the audacity to reveal his oversight on Facebook:

The 63-year-old leader underwent prostate surgery on Feb. 16, 2015, and was subsequently discharged from hospital on Feb. 18.

However, it has come to light now that he had not submitted his MC in the last three weeks, prompting some questions on how the government deals with accounting processes in real time.

One Singaporean, Gia Am See, said he is aghast at the lack of proper accounting processes: “There needs to be a proper system in place to prevent such oversight. Now it might appear as a trivia matter, but what if there are bigger issues in the future?”

“He needs to remember he is the prime minister, so he shouldn’t have overlooked such matters as he is not setting a good example. Backdating his MC should be avoided.”

Zuo Pai Lang, a human resource officer, said she cannot condone PM Lee’s actions as it makes it hard for his subordinates: “I can imagine how the HR girl feels. She needs to account for his days off but cannot chase him for the MC because he is the prime minister.”

“Now she has to work overtime to sort out the mess and backdate properly.”

“Disrupt her work-life balance only.”
