Multi-billion highway helps divert road users to take trains and buses.

Roads were clear for the past few days on the Marina Coastal Expressway.

This after the initial few days last week where traffic conditions were tight and constipated, forcing thousands to reconsider their travelling route.

Tah Di Tieh, a Singaporean said: “There are no more driving woes for me on the MCE. That’s because I am taking the train to work as I don’t want to drive on the godforsaken road again.”

He also said: “It is great to know that billions need to be spent to change people’s behaviour to encourage them to take public transport.”

Other drivers said they will not travel on MCE, unless necessary.

Wa Mai La, a local said: “Like, for example, when I’m lying in the hearse on my way to the crematorium and they take the MCE.”

This is to help ease conditions especially on days with heavy flow.

Singapore is looking into installing up to seven Electronic Road Pricing gantries along the Marina Coastal Expressway.

This is to help ease traffic flow after massive jams and bottlenecks occurred in the first two days the $4.3 billion MCE opened to the public three days ago.

However, Singapore has reassured drivers that the ERP prices will be adjusted according to traffic flow and costs incurred by the vehicles will be staggered.

An ERP spokesperson, who declined to be named for fear of reprisal, said: “The congestion on MCE is a sign that ERP is needed to help improve traffic flow.”

“So the plan is: From 730 a.m. to 8 a.m., a typical car travelling down MCE will pay $5 at the first gantry and $5.50 at the second gantry and $6 at the third gantry and so on.”

“This is called staggered pricing so by the time the car reach the seventh gantry, it will be about $45 in total.”

Drivers that New Nation spoke to said they believe the ERP gantries on MCE will improve traffic conditions in the long term.

Yi Ming Le, a Singaporean, said: “I’m sure the MCE jam will clear up once the ERP gantries come up.”

“This is because most Singaporeans will have emigrated by then.”

Highway’s popularity is evident as everyone is on it.

Given the popularity of the Marina Coastal Expressway, as everyone appears to be on it, the authorities have announced that all roads in Singapore will be diverted onto it from 2014.

This is so everyone who hasn’t been on it will get a chance to drive through it.

This plan was announced today as epic jams and bottlenecks on MCE on its second day after opening is proof of the highway’s draw.

One Singaporean, Tat Chia, said: “I think diverting all roads onto MCE is a good idea since it cost $4.3 billion to build. Might as well all Singaporeans have a chance to savour it.”

One taxi driver, Hua Tak Xi, said he has already started to ferry his passengers through the new road: “You see how much I make? Shiok boh…”
