Speculative invoicing made them feel violated and harassed.

Hundreds of Singaporeans from all walks of life, who received unsolicited lawyer’s letters demanding they make a written offer of damages and costs for alleged illegal downloading, are applying for the recently instituted Protection from Harassment Act against Dallas Buyers Club LLC and the law firms they hired to send out letters of demand.

This after United States company Dallas Buyers Club LLC, which owns the film’s rights, had identified more than 500 Singapore Internet Protocol (IP) addresses from subscribers of Singtel, Starhub and M1 where the movie was downloaded illegally.

They subsequently compelled the three major telcos in Singapore to turn over the names, IC numbers and addresses of subscribers linked to the IP addresses identified.

However, there might be a roadblock ahead.

One of the telco subscribers, who declined to be named, said he is applying for the Protection from Harassment Act against Dallas Buyers Club LLC and the law firms they hired in Singapore: “I feel very harassed, molested and violated by this unsolicited letters of demand. This is speculative invoicing. Plain and simple. It does not constitute proof of any misdeed.”

“And with the Protection from Harassment Act in place in Singapore, we now have the law on our side to protect ourselves as citizens from unwanted advances of law firms and big motion picture companies.”

Previously, the Ministry of Defence had applied for the Protection from Harassment Act against a citizen, which led to citizens applying for it against the Singapore Armed Forces and MINDEF, as a counter-harassment measure.

By forcing SMRT Ltd (Feedback) to shut up, another 10 Facebook pages will pop up to take its place.

Xiaxue’s lawyer, whom she engaged to take out a Protection Order against Facebook group SMRT Ltd (Feedback) and serving them notice via email and Facebook, looks set to make big bucks from his blogger client.

This after the lawyer successfully got the State Courts to issue a Protection Order under Originating Summons to shut SMRT Ltd (Feedback) up, prevent them from publishing or continuing to publish more honest statements about Xiaxue — for now.

Singaporeans who heard of this news roundly applauded the lawyer’s candour and actions, as he is set to become very rich making money off Xiaxue because he will never run out of work applying for protection orders on Xiaxue’s behalf.

Tan Dua Lui, one Singaporean who was very impressed, said with SMRT Ltd (Feedback) clamming up, another 10 or more Facebook pages run by anonymous people will be set up to take its place and she will have to engage her lawyer’s services on a routine basis: “Wah the lawyer is damn smart making a lot of money off her.”

“One Facebook page can shut up now. But this will cause 10 Facebook pages run by anonymous people to be set up to take its place.”

“The she needs her lawyer to send 10 letters on her behalf to the admin of the 10 Facebook pages.”

“And after they shut up, another 100 anonymous Facebook pages will be set up to take their place.”

“Imagine one letter he writes she pays him $25… 100 letters will cost $2,500.”

“Wah I should have gone to law school last time so I can also make so much money sending emails.”

“Maybe grow up already can help defend the future prime minister and earn derisory amounts of money.”

Singaporeans from all walks of life, who are sick and tired of paying for exorbitant doctor and lawyer bills, are taking things to Hong Lim Park this weekend to protest against doctors and lawyers that charge very expensive prices.

This after it was revealed that the Singapore Medical Council (SMC) lawyers engaged to fight Dr Susan Lim, who was found guilty by SMC for overcharging a patient, had overcharged Dr Lim.

One of the SMC lawyers is Senior Counsel Alvin Yeo, a PAP MP for Chua Chu Kang GRC.

One Singaporean, Kwa Nor Koon, said: “So now who is going to investigate the overcharging lawyers? Is there a law equivalent of the Singapore Medical Council? Why is the Law Society silent? I thought all lawyers very talkative and argumentative one?”

Other Singaporeans said more has to be done to bring doctors and lawyers back to reality.

Another Singaporean, Mei You Qian, said: “Who is going to take action against overcharging lawyers?”

“Is the Law Society toothless? This case has sullied the reputation of all doctors and lawyers.”

At press time, ordinary Singaporeans said they are contemplating forming their own citizens’ committee to investigate the matter.
