S’poreans support plan for Non-Constituency President where the next best loser also gets a seat

Posted on 28 January 2016

This will allow greater opposition presidents in parliament.

Singaporeans from all walks of life, who support the next best losers because they are so fun to have around, are nodding their heads sagely in support of the proposal to have a Non-Constituency President.

This after they heard that Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong wants to increase the number of Non-Constituency Members of Parliament (NCMPs) from nine to 12 soon, to give those opposition who lost in the general election a seat in parliament as they also have some mandate of the people having won some votes.

One Singaporean, Jiak Leow Bee, said he believes having a Non-Constituency President in Parliament follows the NCMP logic and will be good for Singapore: “This will add to the diversity of voices.”

“Because, currently, the one elected president we have is not saying much most of the time.”

Other Singaporeans said having two presidents will not be disruptive to the system.

Jin Boh Yong, another local, said: “Since one Elected President is already not doing much, having another Non-Constituency President will not make much of a difference either.”

“What we will have is twice the amount of duckweed and vase in Parliament.”
