S’poreans react to male S’pore residents born in 1999 having to register for National Service

Posted on 05 January 2016

Three thoughts that must have went past your mind at some point.

Male Singaporeans and Singapore permanent residents born between Jan. 1, 1999, and April 30, 1999, will be liable for National Service this year.

National Service registration this year will be conducted between Jan. 13 and Feb. 2, 2016.

Those affected, who will be at least 17 years old, may register online at or at the Central Manpower Base (CMPB) Podium at 3 Depot Road.

Here are three thoughts Singaporeans have:

sian-half-auntie “Cannot smoke, cannot vote and cannot buy house. But can carry weapon and train for war.”
Zuo Bing, 43-year-old seamstress

sian-half-uncle “Death, taxes and National Service are the surest things in life.”
Mah Tee, 63-year-old casket maker

happy-bird-girl “National Service is a good time to train citizens to love their country. But, no, no, it’s not for me.”
Ai Guo, 17-year-old patriot

Wang Pei can be considered a new citizen of Singapore. She has been here all her life, just that her environment's changed beyond recognition.
