S’poreans react to Crystal Jade ex-boss giving bonuses to staff after making money from selling restaurant

Posted on 14 August 2015

Three thoughts that must have went past your mind at some point.

Crystal Jade ex-boss Ip Yiu Tung, 66, is back in Singapore to hand out cash bonuses of up to S$40,000 to current and former staff.

This was after he sold the restaurant for US$100 million in 2014 and wanted to redistribute the wealth.

Recipients of the bonuses were initially sceptical about the reward, but were delighted when they received the money from the man himself.

Here are three thoughts Singaporeans have:

sian-half-auntie “How come Lee Hsien Loong never share with me the money he made off my back?”
Gei Wo Qian, 43-year-old on welfare assistance

sian-half-uncle “If only CPF payouts were as generous.”
Gong Chi Kim, 65-year-old retiree

happy-bird-girl “This completely defies expectations in Singapore because people are not used to receiving money from people not involved in elections or politics.”
Gao Zhen Zhi, 19-year-old political science undergrad
