A billionaire Russian tycoon who hit Singapore’s shores over the weekend ended up buying defunct S.League club Gombak United on a whim instead after discovering that Singapore’s property prices are considered too high even by his standards.

Known for his heavy spending on at least one English Premier League club, the Russian money-printing machine is expected to inject fantasy straight into Singapore football, which has suffered from a chronic lack of imagination over many years, culminating in the latest indecision of whether to hire Fandi Ahmad as head coach when it is so obvious they should.

Local football insider, Keh Long Kia, said watching world class footballers like Beckham and Messi play in the S.League is now more likely than ever to become a reality with this purchase by the Russian sheikh: “Wah Singapore Pools the odds siao liao. Like that how to offer bets? Confirm Gombak United win all the games one.”

Gombak United is out of the current S.League season due to financial difficulties as no one watches local football.

It remains a mystery how the other clubs even survive.
