Despite the blistering afternoon sunshine, the Subaru Challenge 2013 that kicked off on Saturday with 400 contestants battling it out for the top prize of a car worth S$85,000 fizzled out within the first five miunutes.

At 1pm, contestants placed their hands on the cars, which are parked at Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza.

By 1.05pm, 394 out of 400 participants dropped out of the competition the moment they heard the COE alone for the car they have to pay out of their own pockets if they won it is $90,000.

This is $5,000 more than the value of the car itself.

Ah Nee Kwee, one of the contestants who dropped out, said: “I where got $90,000? You think Singapore is Switzerland? Here got Swiss standard of living?”

The last hand remaining on a car wins.

The contest is into its 12th year.

Last year’s winner walked away with his prize after three days, six hours and 30 minutes, a little less than the 2008 record of three days, nine hours, and 32 minutes.

The other six contestants that did not dropped out are Mr Seah’s children.

    Since the Article doesn’t explain
The Certificate of Entitlement or COE is the quota license received from a successful winning bid in a open bid uniform price auction which grants the legal right of the holder to register, own and use a vehicle in Singapore for a period of 10 years.

Shouldnt it be 6 out of 400 left the competion in first 5min…?

    • Sean

Erm… no? It pointed out clearly that 394 of the actual 400 contestants; gave up on the competition. “6 out of 400 left the competition in first 5min” would meant that 394 of the actual 400 contestants REMAINED in the competition whilst only 6 dropped out. ==
