Not keeping left on escalator will incur a fine

Posted on 28 September 2013

Lucrative stream of revenue as more choose to keep right without moving.

To prevent commuters from hogging the right side of MRT escalators, the authorities will be issuing fines to those who do not keep left.

This is due to an increase in the number of commuters who do not give way and insist on standing on the left.

And the fines collected will be a lucrative stream of revenue as a lot of people are violators and there is a lot of money to be made in this area.

Many commuters interviewed said not standing on the left of the escalator if you know you’re too lazy to move along is similar to not giving way to ambulances on the road.

This is a menace to society.

One commuter, Zhan Zhuo Bian, said: “It’s damn annoying when people stand on the right and don’t budge.”

“Yes, I know many of these people are foreigners who do not know the systems of Singapore. But this will be the best time to introduce them to this country. Tell them straight: ‘Keep to your left lah! Welcome to Singapore!’

Other commuters interviewed said there are only a few times that standing on the right is permissible.

Lang Fei Wei, a Singaporean, said: “The only time anyone can keep right is when there is a really fat person or conjoined twins standing on the escalator, rendering the right side unpassable.”

“Always remember: Keep left, it is the right thing to do.”

“Keep right, if that’s what’s left to do.”
