Super bastard ST calls ex-SMRT corp comm woman chief a ‘spokesman’

Posted on 27 July 2013

Plays gender card, riles feminists.

The Straits Times, long known to evoke strong, negative feelings among Singaporeans, is at it again.

This time, they have managed to rile feminists.

In one of its headlines on July 27, 2013, ST called the female ex-SMRT corporate communications chief a “spokesman”.

This has led to some denouncements.

A prominent local feminist, Teo Lee An, said: “They could have used spokeswoman or spokesperson. Why use ‘spokesman’?”

Other more militant feminists chimed in.

Hor Yi Si, a certified bra-burning feminist, said: “This is an attempt by man to use the penis to oppress women.”

ST house style is actually “spokesman” for everything. Same way that an unknown gender is always he.
