Sumiko Tan refuses to blame Sumiko Tan

Posted on 26 November 2012

She accuses online bullies of being “meanies” and happily forgets she might be at fault.

Another week goes by and another potential Pulitzer Prize-winning article gets regurgitated by SPH’s darling, Sumiko Tan.

In this week’s missive published in The Sunday Times on Nov. 25, 2012, Sumiko Tan gives her incisive take on what drives cyber flaming:

Basically, she blames everyone and everything but herself.

So what exactly is the world of online flaming according to Sumiko Tan?

Having been on the receiving end of trolls since the Interweb became mainstream, Sumiko Tan provides at least seven hackneyed/ recycled/ overdone reasons in this week’s Sunday Times piece about why people are mean to other people online.

1. People are mean because that’s who they are.

2. Anonymity causes people to be on their worst behaviour.

3. The speed of digital communication makes it easier to shoot off an insult.

4. There is a lack of social cues and body language online.

5. Strangers treat strangers badly.

6. Bullies want to show off their views.

7. Bullies like to fill their minds with evil thoughts and they deserve pity.

I mean, New Nation does not enjoy stating the obvious, but here are just three timeless reasons how and why online meanies and bullies get inspired:

1. Annoyance with an overpaid columnist.

Sept. 30, 2012. Mmm yes, First World Problems.

2. Annoyance with an overpaid columnist who writes articles about nothing in particular.

The Sunday Times, Nov. 11, 2012. Oh poor you, I can relate to feeling over-privileged.

3. Annoyance with an overpaid columnist who writes articles about nothing in particular fortnight after another goddamn fortnight.

Oct. 28, 2012. If that’s the case, what does that make you? Hmmm…

For being thick-skinned, she is nominated to be Cooler Than You.

LOL. Another good one by newnation. Her rantings annoy me too.

Yes! finally someone who shares my view of Sumiko Tan. Sometimes I just want to tell her to GET OVER IT and that Singapore does not revolve around her! she writes so much irrelevant, self centered articles!

I think her columns annoy 90% of readers but we still look forward to reading them anyway so we can ridicule here. Who’s playing who here then…hmmm

It’s always such a shame to me when people have such a great sphere of influence but use it primarily to perpetuate fluff… but maybe I’m just being sour grapes. :(

    don’t give her any attention …and she’ll go away…
