Singaporeans from all walks of life, who cannot believe how easy solutions to problems are not filtered upstream to the authorities more quickly, are shaking their heads in disbelief.

This after Singapore manged to let hackers break into SingHealth to steal personal data belonging to hundreds of thousands of Singaporeans when such a thing could be prevented with existing solutions.

One Singaporean, Kum Gong, said: “It is inconceivable that Singapore has managed to let hackers break into its system when there is existing ways to keep the data secure and watertight.”

“If the government can lock up Singaporeans Central Provident Fund monies and keep it out of reach of its people, why can’t this same system be used to keep the SingHealth data out of reach of hackers?”

“Why the lax standards for personal data but stringent protection for CPF monies? Why not house both details under CPF, which is impenetrable even for locals?”

Other locals said having two sets of systems might actually be the best deterrence.

Another local, Mai Siew Leow, said: “The robustness of the CPF system will send a message to Singaporeans and hackers.”

“If Singapore really wants to, the government can just continue to separate personal SingHealth data from CPF.”

“The hackers can take away your personal data, but Singaporeans can never take away their CPF monies.”

“CPF system is so strong, Singaporeans cannot access it to take out their own money.”
