Full Time National Servicemen (NSFs) will get to sit down on public transport on SAF Day held on July 1.

This is to honour NSFs for contributing more than two years of their lives throughout their lifetime to Singapore’s defensive capabilities.

Allowing them a chance to take a seat on public buses and trains for one day a year is the first time this initiative has been undertaken since SAF Day started in 1969.

Singaporeans from all walks of life, who believe serving NS is a must even for foreigners, said this is a first step towards a society that cares for soldiers.

One Singaporean, Kee Zho Peng, said: “NSFs must also be allowed to kiss their girlfriends, wives or mistresses in public on SAF Day.”

“This will at least allow them to feel like a normal human being on this one day a year because they have to hold back the rest of the time.”

Other locals said more should be done to promote the welfare of soldiers.

Another local, Ann Nasev, said: “All NSFs must be allowed to automatically pass their IPPT on July 1 every year.”

“That would allow NSFs to feel appreciated the most.”

Singaporean men from all walks of life who have served National Service are worried that PAP MPs Janil Puthucheary and Zainudin Nordin are feeling left out.

This is because these two PAP MPs did not serve NS and today is SAF Day, a day where men who have served NS feel somewhat proud that they did and share photos of themselves on Facebook.

One proud Singaporean son who spent two years of his life wearing leaves and eating combat ration, Kee Zho Peng, said: “I scared the two MPs feel left out. Because without serving National Service, you wouldn’t feel like a real man.”

And to help tide the two MPs over this period of feeling excluded from the world where real men inhabit, there are other Singaporean sons who have volunteered to help them feel included.

Ki Chiong Sua, a seller of NS equipment at Beach Road army market, said: “Should make them wear No. 4 and camo-cream the whole of SAF Day. I can donate.”

Others, however, were quick to point out that Janil Puthucheary and Zainudin Nordin are inspirational figures.

Bian Zho Peng, a Singaporean youth trying to evade NS, said: “Wah, never do NS can still be MP ah? Steady…”

To give more recognition to the contributions of NSmen and women, a bunch of businesses are offering freebies and discounts to them.

All the 800,000 active and former military personnel have to do is to show up wearing their uniforms and they get 20% off all petrol and diesel at SPC or watch movie for $6.50 each at Golden Village on top of other privileges on July 1.

However, not all are biting the bait.

One NSman, Mai Cheng Sah, said he will not wear his uniform because of love: “I don’t want to wear because I cannot fondle my girlfriend in public if I do. Later military police catch.”

Another NSman, Buay Sai Koon, said wearing his uniform will disrupt his alertness: “I cannot sit on the MRT and sleep. Later kenna DB.”

Another NSman, Buay Sai Poon, said wearing his uniform will make him healtier: “I cannot hold cigarette. Later kenna STOMP.”

But one NSman said he will want to wear his uniform because it is very subversive.

Tng Tao Moh, said: “My hair so long, steady ah.”
