They thank the French for trying and hope more can be done next year.
This after the Michelin Guide was launched in Singapore recently trying to raise the profile of cuisine here and caught the passing attention of hawkers.
One hawker, Ba Yew Poh, said: “Singapore’s hawkers have taken note of Michelin Guide’s efforts to promote local food and heritage. It was a commendable effort by the French to try to get involved in a highly nuanced and established culture.”
“We would like to recognise the Michelin Guide with a certificate of participation for taking the time and effort to try to understand things.”
“We hope more could be done by them in the following years, as we would appreciate hard work in sourcing and certifying the best of the best, instead of a hack job of trying to make it look authoritative.”
“Thanks for trying too hard.”
Other hawkers said they might consider browsing the guide in their free time because they know Singapore too well already and do not need additional distractions from foreign entities.
