Singaporeans from all walks of life, who create their own myths and legends, have come together to praise the Merlion at One Fullerton.

This after the Merlion took five minutes out of its busy schedule being a tourist attraction to be a Good Samaritan instead by helping to put out a bumboat fire.

The Merlion did so by redirecting its water spout at the bumboat as it was engulfed in a blaze on the Singapore River.

One Singaporean, Mah Lye Yan, who witnessed the scene, said: “It reminded me of Singapore’s nation-building efforts.”

“This sort of selflessness is hard to find these days.”

Other locals said this story will add to the Merlion’s narrative as a defender of Singapore values.

Gian Lui, another local, said: “If we can make this narrative cogent, we can monetise it overseas and attract more tourist dollars.”

The Merlion has been named Singapore’s Statue of the Year once again.

This after it beat off intense competition from ESM Goh and Tony Tan this year, where both claimed joint runners-up position.

Singaporeans from all walks have heartily congratulated the Merlion on her victory.

Char Tao, a Singaporean, said: “It takes quite a lot of effort to be standing around with mouth slightly open, looking out of place.”

“But that’s certainly more than what some other people are doing.”

The Merlion was seized by police, leaving its spout dangling in the air

The Merlion together with 21 Malaysians were arrested by the Singapore police after they were caught staging an outdoor protest at the Merlion Park at 4.50pm on Saturday.

This despite the police having advised that such gatherings are against Singapore’s laws.

The Merlion was arrested on grounds that it was non-local.

This is because the Merlion came into being in the 1960s as a result of the fertile imagination of its creator, Alec Fraser-Brunner, who is British.

Therefore, the Merlion is technically British, a nationality who used to lord it over us when Singapore was part of the colonial empire.
