The sentencing of a 29-year-old former Singapore Press Holdings scholar, Eisen Teo, on the charge of having sex with a minor, has once again directed public attention to the versatility of scholarship recipients and the scholarship system.

This recent case reaffirms the precedents set in 2010 and 2012 by former Ministry of Education scholar, Jonathan Wong, who was sentenced for the possession of child pornography, as well as having sex with an underage girl.

A Singaporean, Sng Gin Nah, said he looked upon all these cases positively: “I find it very heartening to see that the Singaporean scholarship system works as it has a knack for picking out the cream of the crop, as well as the criminals.”

“There must be something about this system that makes it so robust. Or there’s something in the water.”

Other interviewees who want to be bonded, said, either way, being a scholar by going through the scholarship system means having a secured future.

A prospective scholarship recipient, Gao Chew Ren, said: “Teo and Wong showed that being a scholar will help secure your future.”

“They don’t have to worry about food and accommodation. For a while.”
