Ex-The Real Singapore editor, Australian Ai Takagi, has been sentenced to 10 months’ jail on Wednesday, March 23, 2016, the day of Lee Kuan Yew’s one-year death anniversary.

The 23-year-old had concocted “scandalous, provocative and racy material” in a bid to increase TRS’ following and garner “enormous” advertising revenue.

The public prosecutor had initially intended to seek a 12-month jail term, but increased this to 14 months after realising Takagi was “devoid of genuine remorse” for manufacturing the seditious posts for profit.

In all, Takagi and her Singaporean husband, Yang Kaiheng, 27, had pocketed S$492,500 from December 2013 to April 2015. This sum of money, prosecutors said, was gained as part of their modus operandi via the selective publishing of doctored and “patently false” material on the now-defunct socio-political blog.

Yang faces similar charges but will challenge them.

For each count of sedition, Takagi faces up to three years’ jail, a fine of S$5,000, or both.
