Bukit Batok residents from all walks of life, who believe it is an honour for any member of parliament to serve them, have come together as one to lay out a five-year plan for the next MP elected to be in charge of their single-member constituency.

The residents organised a press conference where they informed their next potential MP what exactly are the criteria they are looking for, the duties the MP is meant to carry out when elected and the level of commitment he has to put in to meet the residents’ expectations.

One resident, Yao Qiu, said: “As it is an honour to serve Singaporeans, we believe being a representative of the people is its own reward.”

“As such, our next MP must give up 90 percent of his salary to the residents.”

“Moreover, our next MP must show up for Meet-the-People Sessions twice a week and have a parliament attendance of 98 percent and above.”

“Absenteeism shall not be tolerated, unless there is a death in the MP’s family. If so, one day’s leave shall be granted on compassionate grounds.”

“He must also be able to readily sing karaoke songs with the seniors.”

Other residents said their demands are easy to meet, so long as the next MP does not commit adultery.
