You forgot the fellas who will be contesting against DPM Wong and his team in Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC….The SPP fellas consisting of…
    SPP-Chiam See Tong,Alex Tan,Justin Ong,Hamim Aliyas and an Indian
PAP-Wong Kan Seng,Ng En Hen,Zainuddin Nordin,Hri Kumar Nair,Josephine Teo….Lina Loh’s fighting in Potong Pasir and Sin Kek Tong for Hong Kah North against Amy Khor….Let’s hope it’s not a 3-way fight in…

  • noname

Dear leaders of WP, NSP and SDP,

We Singaporeans have suffer long enough under the fox Lee family. Please spread your team wisely so that each zone has 1 opposition party contesting in the next General Election. I can assure you, many of us are VERY VERY SICK of being “Native but 3rd class citizen of a nation governed by idiots who import congestions and contention”. We want those people who made our island a “Congested Islet of Foreign Talents (42% of population) – Singapore.” – TOTALLY OUT!

Also please come contest in Chua Chu Kang or Jurong GRC, the western side! Many of us want to exercise our rights – to vote those PAP elites PIGS out!

Sincerely hope for a CHANGE for Singapore!

    • http://newnation.sg Shihan

@noname: thumbs down for your comment. no value add.

    • Landon Leo

      ‘Suffering’? What ‘suffering’?

  • seriously?

why even bother about Singapore politics? fear is already instilled in the citizens, we can’t talk boldly about our views, our opposition is hmmm.. how should i put it delicately… not performing. the only right we can exercise is to vote and we will probably (surely) know what is the results anyway.

  • Something to consider

Never forget the fate of Hillview estate. They voted for an opposition MP and now their houses are flattened when they voted the PAP back.

What if the oppo guy is a goon? What will happen?

    • seriously?

if you didnt give them a chance to do their job, they will never learn.

did PAP turn out to be the great party at the start? we don’t know (basically they only sing praise about their achievements and censor the negative news) but they had many years to learn.

opposition has been contained for so long. for 13 years there were no such thing as an opposition party. so obviously they have so much to catch up on and as long as we dont think they are ready, they never will.

      • Something to consider

But Singaporeans do have a pragmatic view of things. The opposition will never give the materialistic stuff Singaporeans want. While other PAP-friendly areas like Marine Parade gets upgrading and bigger libraries, are they willing to sacrifise for the opposition?

    hi NN

why is my name in Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC?

    Alex Tan

  • Mr K

So in which case I hereby decree that the SPP team for Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC will be Chiam See Tong(Chief),Alex Tan,Hamim Aliyas,Wilfred Leung and Yen Khim Khooi…..Wait for the outcome soon to find out whether the SPP’s coming to Bishan…..

  • terence

Alex, ST wrote thus: “He emphasised that he had enough candidates even within his Singapore People’s Party (SPP) without the need for a merger with another party. He declined comment on who would be on his GRC team, but accompanying him on his walkabout were 23-year-old financial adviser Alex Tan and 48-year-old businessman Mohamad Hamim Aliyas.”

This post is fluid and changes as more information becomes available.

    • http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=153492722129 Alex Tan

hmm fluid and changes? you can put Mas Selamat in the team then. (:

  • http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=153492722129 Alex Tan

    Hi Terence

As a SPP member, its very natural I support the campaigns. Please remove my name from the Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC list. This is very inaccurate and I do not want to fuel any speculations. Thanks.

    • Mr K

Oh its just speculation and also predicts….I didnt really mean to put up this speculation, and discomfort, but I’m a true fan of SPP members since Mr Chiam has been recently the MP for the nearest SMC,and is it true that he will be coming to Bishan???I was just asking only as I’m a resident here for the past 21 years….

      • http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=153492722129 Alex Tan

yes Mr K we are coming to Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC. vote for us and send SPP into Parliament, we will question PAP’s hard truths for you.

        • Terence

Hi Alex, unless you are prepared to tell me outright that you are not contesting in Bishan Toa-Payoh GRC, I will not remove your name. I hope for your understanding.

          • http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=153492722129 Alex Tan

            Hi Terence

I will not contest in Bishan Toa Payoh GRC. Remove my name now.

            Alex Tan

        • Mr K

Thanks a lot Mr Tan……So we’ll get to wait for the latest outcome of the SPP team with Chiam himself and was there a Malay here????You may not be contesting right??So when’s the Nomination Day,somewhere in April right??

          • http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=153492722129 Alex Tan

You’re welcome Mr K. SPP will announce our candidates on Nomination Day, and yes a Malay candidate is required for the GRC. You might have to ask PM Lee when would it be hahah.

What I can assure you is that we have a very quality team that will definitely catch the PAP offguard.

  • terence

Alex, thanks for making that clear, and contributing to New Nation’s coverage. we wish you well for the coming GE.

    Hi All opp leaders,

Here is my take on the list above.

On all smcs that has three cornered fight,PAP will win,
On all GRCs that has no Opp heavyweights in the nomination,PAP will win,
And please..dont even dream of marine parade,Tanjong pg…
    Dont you guys ever learned?
I am not saying that you guys dont have a chance,
i was thrill when i learned that they have been an increased in SMCs as at least the opp will have a fighting chance to grab at least 4 of them including hougang and pp..
but when i look at the 3 cornered fights,
    sigh…
So my prediction…and i am not saying that i am pesimistic,
    its downright logic..
    Hougang and PP(only just)
    the rest…
lets see if i am right..
Then you guys can prove me wrong
(i am willing to say that u all wont win in any 3 connered fights)

  • Ethan

Everything else being equal, the main advantage of the present GRC based system over SMC based system for the ruling party lies in the inability of the opposition to muster credible teams of opposition candidates to contest them over the past elections. At the component level, a five-member GRC is no more than five SMCs combined together.

However, if the opposition parties are able to muster sufficiently good quality candidates, a GRC can experience the same degree of swing votes seen in the SMC, especially in the heartland housing estates.

Supposing that swing voters constitute up to 10% to 15% of the valid votes cast and the PAP currently enjoys 60% popular vote mandate, contesting a GRC could present a real chance for the opposition teams if they could pool their resources and field their best candidates in a few target GRCs, as opposed to a) three corner fights and b) mixing good candidates with relatively younger / inexperienced ones.

    • Something to consider

Then really, any sincere opposition GRC team with the party head, chairman, two or three scholarship holders having public service experience must be fielded – to show that the opposition are pulling all stops for contesting the election. This should make even two or even three ministers may shiver, like that Acting Minister who was once MP of Bukit Gombak.

  • Something to consider

Good article, even after so many days.

Anyway, I personally feel that Steve Tan asks himself to be out at the direction of political analysts, who feel that PAP needs a stronger team against NSP to hold the fort in Tampines GRC. The replacement could be a rather good MP who can boost PAP’s chances, and that reserve candidate is known, in basketball terms, a ‘sixth man’ who can make contributions to specialized health issues, like Dr. Balaji did a few years ago.

  • Mr K

Correction-it’s AMK GRC candidates as follows..PAP vs RP…

    Ang Mo Kio GRC

PAP = Lee Hsien Loong, Yeo Guat Kwang, Ang Hin Kee, Inderjit Singh, Seng Han Thong, Dr Intan Azura Mokhtar

RP = Alex Tan, Arthero Lim Tung Hee, Vignes Ramachandran, Lim Zi Rui, Mansor Rahman, Osman Sulaiman

Youve been typing up the Tanjong Pagar ones as the AMK candidates…True,Ng Teck Siong’s team wanted to contest Tanjong Pagar but at the last minute too late for them for their boo boo…WALKOVER for MM Lee’s team….I hope TP may be seeing THE FIRST CONTEST in 2016 or if MM Lee steps down before the term ends, the GRC may be likely to see a by-election there, after the 1992 Marine Parade GRC by-election….

    • Fiona

The inevitable might happen if we aren’t careful.

  • Powderpuffgirl

While PAP will still ultimately win, lets hope its only a marginal victory say, 55% PAP – 45 % Opposition. The government needs a wake up call and must know that we are sick of being treated like puppets and inferior citizens. They have no interest in the ordinary Singaporean. The current government only looks after the rich and “foreign talents”.

Moreover, after the election, there will be yet another price hike on almost everything. Having a fair number of opposition in the government will help keep this in check, while looking out for the middle and lower classes.

    • Fiona

The PAP is still unsurpassed in grassroots work, no matter what. The Establishment, civil service and the military all work to support the PAP, and we got to accept it.

  • Mr K

Now that Potong Pasir back into the hands of the PAP after all these years, and since it is much closer to Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC,I bet Potong Pasir and Mr Sitoh may join up with the Town Council itself..And most possibly in 2016,Potong Pasir may be absorbed into the GRC as well…..
All the best Mr Sitoh…And thanks Mr Chiam and Mrs Chiam for your courage all these years…May you prosper well….

    • Something to consider

      This will happen.

    90 seats at stake…..All contested….From 12 up to 14/16 SMCs available…..

  • Something to consider

I think 6-man GRCs will be abolished. The population of Pasir Ris-Punggol will be too large for that – and 2 GRCs is poised be formed in the next 5 years. I envision a GRC ring around Aljunied GRC to try to contain Aljunied to its blue corner.

  • Mr K

    LATEST POSSIBLE OUTCOMES FOR 2016 ELECTIONS…..From 87 up to 90 seats(ALL CONTESTED!!!)and NO MORE 6-men GRCs,at least 4-5 members each….14 SMCs at least…

    Whampoa SMC:National Solidarity Party

    Yuhua SMC:Singapore Democratic Party

  • Mr K

To me,there are absolutely at least 3 opps after the ever uncontested GRC of Tanjong Pagar…

Singapore Democratic Party-most likely to be focusing on urban areas such as Orchard Rd and Holland V.And even Dr Chee himself had targetted on it and has been working much on the ground for some years, and planned to conquer there…Supposingly by this year, but he claimed resource constraints….I believe SDP may get on to it as they’ll be planning to cover Central-West areas by 2016….Hope that Dr Chee may make a comeback before his last…..

Reform Party-Kenneth Jeyaretnam himself had explained that parts of it was his late father’s conquest…And significantly,JBJ himself wished a final confrontation with LKY before…Unfortunately,he died before his wish came true…In the meantime,Reform Party had been focusing on Western areas and Kenneth plans to target on both Tanjong Pagar and West Coast GRCs and also Pioneer and Radin Mas,and their concept is even more hybrid, that is both urban and conservative…

Socialist Front-is much more conservative, and is likely to focus on older estates like Tanjong Pagar,Tiong Bahru,Kreta Ayer and Queenstown…Ng Teck Siong himself had targetted on the GRC however failed to be nominated…

So that could be some kind of clashes ahead, but it is most certain the Socialist had once again bowed out and that may leaves both Reform and SDP…However,Kenneth had mentioned that even if it means a 3-cornered fight,Reform may fight there…If that happens,Reform’s image might be totally diminished, due to disunity, and Reform may have scored much lower enough to lose deposits while SDP might be the latest dominant opp besides WP and NSP….

In my conclusion,I think I’ll opt for SDP which may be likely to contest Tanjong Pagar GRC…Cos SDP had some experience, that is contesting in Buona Vista,Tanglin and Cairnhill in 1988 and 1991 elections, even though PKMS now SDA had contested in Buona Vista as well and Tiong Bahru and Queenstown had been conquested by WP in 1988…Hope that I can see some SDP members promoting a bid to Tanjong Pagar GRC in elsewhere:Marina Bay,Shenton Way,CBD,Orchard Rd,Chinatown,Holland V.,etc….But I bet there may be clashes between the dominant Whites, the Red and the Yellows ahead during some hustings around period to be prepared for the 2015-16 elections…By the time,if SDP goes to Tanjong Pagar,I’ll be moving in either Dawson or Buona Vista too,so that there may be easy access to Orchard Rd soon…By then,I’ll be 25-26 to vote for either PAP or the opps….

  • Something to consider

I’ll vote for any party as long as it’s PAP

  • Something to consider

But thinking over it, whYOG? It cost votes.
